Boknes is a holiday village is 24 km from Port Alfred and 126 km from Port Elizabeth. You can walk to the Diaz Cross from Boknes beach (on your left looking out to sea). A walk of about four kilometres.
A popular attraction is the tidal river which offers a wide range of holiday activities. The remote beach at Boknes offers connoisseurs of solitude an opportunity to revel in isolation. The expansive beach, sculpted with sand hills and shallow sand valleys scalloped by easterly winds, has unprotected swimming in shallow water.
Without many facilities this beach is a lure for hardcore surfers, campers and experienced divers.
Off the rocky headlands, fishing and snorkelling tempts, while unexplored sea depths, warmed by the Agulhas current, contributes pristine reefs, with the famed Fountain rocks to the north at Port Alfred accommodating adventure divers. Extended, workable waves make for exceptional surfing when the south-westerlies come through, otherwise there is a tendency for them to close out.
Undoubtedly, this is one of the most attractive beaches in the regions, the superlative escape destination.
Boknes (or Boknesstrand) is a quiet seaside village situated more or less halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London, and just 36 km from Port Alfred. This stretch of our eastern coastline is known as the Sunshine Coast as it boasts the highest number of sunny days in South Africa. In fact, this area has the best of both worlds - the unique Eastern Cape Valley thicket with its amazingly diverse eco-system, and magnificent unspoilt beaches.
Boknes has approximately 800 stands, with 300 houses and about 150 permanent residents. The Boknes River forms a lagoon at the main beach, which opens to the sea after heavy rains. This lagoon area is a breeding ground for many bird species. Whale and dolphin watching is excellent, and the area is also known as a fisherman's paradise- for both surf- and deep-sea angling.
This relatively unknown and unspoilt area is perfect for retirement, or for tranquil and stress-free holidays. The village is fairly quiet during the year, but comes to life during the summer holidays when the community hall is used, and the children and youth gather together on the beach for group activities and sports.
